7 reasons why Yoga isn't boring  Meeting up with other singles isn't one of them!

The word boring and Yoga seem to go hand in hand in most conversations I?ve had. Even when people don?t say it, I can tell they feel it. Not just because someone told them so or because it was a compulsory subject in the 6th standard/grade. It?s a belief, an obvious truth that just runs through their blood, right down to their bones ? ?Yoga is boring, and people who tell you otherwise are just trying to convince you because it?s working (for some strange reason) for them.?

This 2000-year old science called Yoga, which originated in India, has now become (in the west and now in India too!) a mind-body experience, which starts with ?Namaste!?, a word that has simply replaced ?how you doin? amongst the ?yogis?. Not surprisingly, in India we don?t use either that much, especially not in a Yoga class. In India, we just go to the class, sit down on our mats and remain quiet (I?m talking about the teachers here). This is how the class begins.

Yoga isn?t interesting or engaging because of the many peripherals that surround it. Some people believe the same of vegetarian food ? that it needs to look and taste like meat, or have lots of oil in it, or be excessively spicy (bite back), in order to be ?tasty?. The belief is that vegetarian food is inherently tasteless and so needs special treatment to make it edible. (In truth, every vegetable has its own unique and undeniable flavor and consistency ? a tomato is almost the exact opposite of a potato).

The same is true of Yoga. So here are seven reasons why Yoga isn?t inherently boring as you may think:
  1. A good Yoga class should surprise you? A good yoga class is never repetitive. It should surprise you. If you know exactly what?s coming up next, you may just be doing a sequence that any teacher can memorize. What makes Yoga interesting is the spontaneity and freshness of that particular class.

  2. Yoga has 84,00,000 postures (asanas) ? Yes, according to Hatha Yoga pradeepika, a classic yogic text, there are 84 lakh postures, which means that there are practically an infinite no of variations of a given posture. Which simply means that Yoga has tremendous variety within itself. Most classes teach hardly 20-25 postures and call it Yoga. It?s just the tip of the iceberg. A good yoga class taps into the many variations and works on muscles you never knew existed in your body.

  3. A good Yoga class affects your muscle and body in many different ways (dynamically) ? Unlike a gym based workout where you work on a specific muscle in a specific way repeatedly, yoga combines contractions, stretches, relaxation, isotonic and isometric exercises to create a workout that is just greater than the sum of its parts. (Isometric exercises are those in which the body is static or still while the muscle has to exert a force to remain in position. Isotonic exercises are those in whichthe muscle shortens or lengthens while exerting a force to perform a certain movement.) Every posture (dynamic or static) has its own unique feel. Yoga uses them in equal measure so that your body is truly ?conditioned?.

  4. Yoga works on your breath - Yoga works not only at the muscular level, but also alters your quality of breath as well as your breath rate. It just makes a class that much more interesting. You?ll be surprised to know that your strength, flexibility and endurance are all interlinked with your breath. Deep breathing is better than shallow breathing. Abdominal breathing is better than chest breathing. It?s simple ? the more oxygen you have running through your blood the more energy your muscles will have when they perform an activity. There?s also something called clavicular breathing that greatly increases oxygen levels in your system.

  5. Yoga gives you a high ? Everything runs on hormones. We know it (women know it better). These little chemical messengers can make us feel on top of the world or irritable and low for NO reason. You can beat the Monday blues with yoga. You can cure a bad hangover with yoga (wait for the next article). Yes, your bliss is actually in your own hands and you don?t need any drugs to get you there. Endorphins, adrenalin, relaxin, serotonin ? Yoga gets these tiny messengers to give your brain the right message. We (at Artistic Yoga) call it the ?yoga high?!

  6. Yoga makes you break out of your mind ? If you?ve noticed your mind (if you haven?t, then notice it now), you?ll see that it?s the single biggest cause of your misery/stress/frustration. You?ll also realize that you have practically no control over it. No, it?s not that pesky kid who screams on top of his lungs everyday in your apartment complex. It?s not CNN telling you about one more economic slowdown or recession (crisis) in your country. And it?s not your controlling wife or your overly detached husband that?s the root cause of your existential problems. It?s your best friend, the mind - which repeats the same thought over and over again until you?re exhausted, which worries about the silliest things that are so irrelevant to your being. And which tells you that tomorrow will be a better day, when it actually won?t (because at that point, your mind will be telling you that tomorrow will be better). Because that?s what it does. It has a mind of its own. It drives you crazy. Yoga helps you take control of it and see things for what they really are.

  7. It?s fun and time flies ? A good yoga class does this. Check it out for yourself.
