Where do Yantras come from?
All knowledge originates from Shiva and his beloved Shakti. Parvati was Shiva?s first student and her questions to Shiva and his responses are recorded in the Puranas, Vedas, Tantras etc. He revealed all this Vidya (knowledge) about the Absolute and how a mere man can achieve it to Rishis (sages) who were greatly dedicated in their sadhana (spiritual practice) and devotion to Shiva. This knowledge was passed down from the sages Gorakhnath and Matsyendranath to their chosen disciple who was initiated as the next Guru, in an unbroken lineage. Yogini Hridaya, Kulananda Tantra, Kularnava Tantra, Kali Tantra and hundreds of other texts describe in detail the sadhana of the deity which includes making of the Yantra. The Devirahasya Tantra, speaks in detail about the procedure of the worship of the Deity but the Guru is an integral part of the worship and it is He who initiates the sadhaka (disciple) into the sadhana (practice). It is he who is one with the Absolute. It is he who has conquered all desires and lust for power/knowledge, that can truly pass on the true knowledge of all Tantric practices including worship of the Yantra. It is also only with the guidance and grace of such a Guru that one makes any spiritual progress. Today however, we see that astrologers, fortune-tellers or priests who may have some siddis (gifts) of prediction or knowledge of the scriptures take on this role as Yantras can be used for all kinds of purposes, and not just spiritual growth.
